I'm a big fan of Canadian jazz guitarist Ed Bickert. His single note playing is great but it's his chord playing that has been so influential. Ed is a very diatonic player and nothing he plays is technically speaking, incredibly dense or complex yet he's a wizard at using rootless chord substitutions to weave incredibly flowing tapestries of sound that can be quite hard to figure out.

Here's a Bickert chord run I first worked out on guitar - took me a while - that shows his cool concepts at work over II, V, I chord progressions.

Got no time this week to record it properly so here's a MIDI of the above licks. You need to hear it over the chords to really hear the magic of what Ed does.

Thanks Andy for turning me on to Ed Bickert, I spent all morning listening to the Paul Desmond Quartet. What a great player!

One of the best ever! And the most mysterious in terms of what he actually played to make the sounds he made due to his use of substitute harmony.
