I recently purchased an 8 string Rickenbacker and the first string has significantly lower volume than the other 7. Any ideas. I have it tuned to a A6 with the high e a .015.

Alas, it seems to be a design flaw with 8-string Ric horseshoe pickups. It appears to be largely because the outer strings are barely over the ends of the coil, and the high string typically has much lower mass than the lowest string. The 8-string coils are the same size as the 6- and 7-string pickups, but the total spacing from lowest to highest string is wider. I've read that another contributing factor is the distance from the horseshoe poles.
