I was under the impression that it varied, but I'm not an expert. For the sake of clarity I'd like to tap into the wisdom of those who are.

Mine is a '50, that I bought new, and has only one pickup.
The pre-war models I've seen pics of had three, if I remember correctly.....

Didn't the New Yorkers come with a pickup underneath the neck?

There were different variations over the years.

Referring to Mark Makins book "Palm Trees,Senoritas & Rocket ships (This should be on every ones Christmas list) I was suprised that the model was in production from 1935 to 1968, the ONLY instrument to span National & Valco.

Visible pickups, invisible ones under the fretboard, depending on the model & year you could have plenty going on with the three way selector.

Something for everyone & in advance of it,s years, one for NRP to tackle???

Interesting thread! From the Back of Mind I had read there several pick ups.

I would be interested where they were located. Were all of them visible?

On my National, the hidden pickups are situated about the 17th and 24th fret from memory. The interesting thing is each pickup has spilt coils ,one for the three treble strings and one for the three bass strings, the the two treble string coils are wired in series the thru a .047 cap to the switch. The two bass coils are also wired in series thru a .1 cap to the switch. Both coil sides are independent of each other. The switch selects Bridge pickup alone,Fingerboard pickups alone ,Bridge pickup and Treble side coils of the fingerboard pickups. Its a very complicated wiring.A side note a few people have thought the fingerboard pickups have been faulty as an ohm meter connected to the output will give no real reading because of the series caps in line. Cheers

Mine has only one pickup and it is situated over the strings rather than under them.
