Well, I got to change my signature, because I'm now a Zum owner instead of an emmons owner. yep, made the trade a couple days ago with a fellow forumite, and my Zum is own it's way. now I've got to get used to a completely different copedent. How long did it take you guys that have changed copedents, to get to where you could play with no problem?

how completely different Terry?
Going from an Emmons to a Day? or vice versa?
knee lever functions not in the positions you are used to? (e lowers moved from right to left knee and the like?)
more levers than before?
all of the above?
when i went to the U12 from a D10 I also changed the positions of several knee levers from where I had been used to them for 25 years. I was comfortable within a few weeks; but still 8 years later if I'm not paying attention (the operative phrase) my muscle memory takes over and I find myself pushing the wrong lever for a particular change...
congrats and enjoy the Zum!!!
I do!

Terry, Welcome to club Zum.... I made the switch about 5 years ago from an Emmons P-P and have never looked back. The Zum is very easy to change the setup around if you don't like what you will be getting. A couple of ball end allen wrenches will greatly speed the process.

Dave, it's knee levers only. the pedals are the same as mine. but the knee levers are exactly opposite from mine. eight yrs, and you still have to watch? Oh Lordy, I got a one track mind for sure, so I may have to have the knees changed. I like the way he has the Zum set up so I'm gonna try the change.
Thanks Robert, if I can't get use to the change fairly quick, then I'll take it to Mr Jack Matthews and get him to change it for me. He's real good at workin on steels.

Terry, it is not a big job to change things around on a Zum -- very easy to do yourself, and if you need any extra rods etc, you can get them from Bruce. |

Thanks Paddy. If I decide I have to change the knees, I'll try it myself. But I'm purty determined to learn this new setup. I like the idea of LKL to raise the E's and LKR to lower.

Terry, I recently changed 2 knee levers to opposite knees in opposite directions so I could add another knee lever to work in conjunction with the opposite knee. WOW! Now I'm confused. Anyway the change after 30 years+ was a little tough, it made me think more but it is becoming a little more natural now. If you need to change the knee levers around a bit, do it. I did it on my Emmons and Lord know knows I'm no steel mechanic. BTW I'm jealous. I wish I had a Zum. One of these days.

I bought a ZUM a while ago that was completely opposite what I had been used to. I called Bruce and he was so helpful. I laid on my back under the steel and one by one he told me exactlywhat to do. Now Its just like I like it. Also after all the help from Bruce I now understand most of what I need to do myself. So recently I was able to change some things around all by myself. I'm so proud of myself LOL.... |

Terry,
You need to know this right up front. Bruce still owns that guitar, you just have custody! It's part of his family and will always be. I'm proud to have custody of two of his family members. Think I'm proud of 'em ? Yep. Welcome to the club. |

I went from 30 years of RKL lowering 4 & 8 to LKR lowering them. It took a little getting used to and I did have to think about it and sometimes would start to grap the wrong lever, but I would correct it before it was too late. Now about a year later, I don't have to think about it. I did like it better the way I had it to start with, but I am not going to go back. I am playing something right now where I have to go from lowering 4 and 8 straight into rasing them. There is a little "glitch" because my 4 & 8 raise is on the same knee, so I am having to quickly move my LK from right to left. By having them on different knees in the past, I could make a smoother transition. I played a universal for 12 years prevously, so I did not have a 9th string but had to raise my 10th. My current SD-12 has the 9th string. I got used to having the 9th string again too. So, don't worry about it. You can change copedents and get used to the new changes. You just have to think a little more for a while, but once the brain is trained, it will work out. |

Welcome to the Zum club.I have a double 10 with 8&6 that is my main guitar.I changed it from Emmons to Day years ago and changed both pedals and knee levers. It was very easy to do.Last week I added a second string lower, half step, and have been having fun with that. Also have a Zum SD12 that has been set up every way you can think of.Have fun.

yep ! welcome to the Zum side of thangs
i asked the same as you a little while back when i got my first Zum (D10 9/
it was'nt difficult changin' knee levers & pedals around even though i've got the older model bellcranks
just took a little longer that's all
before you change anything, sit down w: your Zum and see if you can get used to it's set up
if you do make any changes keep track on paper of what you're takin' off and what your set up is to be
when in doubt lay out & ask
you'll get all the help you need here |

Terry;
I didn't mean to scare ya with the "8 years" thing... It is rare that I goof (and chiefly because of lack of attention to detail- I get caught up in the flow and my knees go off on their own...), and is partially tied up in the fact that I switch back and forth between my ZB which is set up pretty much like my old knee lever set up, and the Zum with the new setup. |

I have been transformed. I am now a Zumster.
This guitar is just the way Buster said it was. new in every way, and plays smooth as butter. I've never played a steel guitar that plays as smmoth as this one. and it looks brand new, and has GREAT tone with the GeorgeL E66 pu's on it. I'm totally satisfied with my new Zum. Now I know why people wait for over a year to get one.
Mr Bruce builds a GREAT guitar!
