That reminds me of something attributed to Chet Atkins when someone told him that he had a great sounding guitar.
He put it on its stand and said "how does it sound now?" |

Funny ! But the thing about it is the Push Pulls do indeed have a unique sound compared to other all pull guitars , it's not that the all pulls don't don't sound good, they do, but not the same. It's not a diss on other Steels.
Many folks do not like the P Pulls as with them comes assumed crazy set up and not so slick action but the tone can suck you in.
I now have two, I love the first one which is an 81 brown guitar. It has become my go to Steel each gig. I recently acquired an 85 black D10, slowly taking my time bringing it to gig duty for me, former Emmons tech Doug Palmer reversed the Day setup to Emmons as well as inspected and tweaked the entire PUSH PULL system. From there I made some minor setup changes , pulled both head stocks, replaced a few tuners, replaced each of the changer cap head tuning screws and put it all back together.
So for a day or two now now I have been playing this black 85 in my music room, all I can say is good grief, as much as I like #1, (the brown 81) this one has something special going on , I can't put my finger on it but I can say this, it's doing something the brown one doesn't do ! Evidently the Black ones do sound better ! Both guitars have the stock Emmons single coil pups.
I also have an S10 Pro 1 and a D10 Legrande II which I love, but both of the P Pulls bring something different to the "sound" table. Maybe someone else won't hear it, but I do and the fact of the matter is, regardless of the instrument in your hand, if it wakes you up, if you hear something coming from the instrument, you will play different.
So I totally get it when Karen says it sounds good !

Sounding good is what THEY DO
I find my p/p guitars are the best drivers of effects of any other brands or designs I've ever owned. Clean mids. ZumSteel I played for 20 years came close.
On some guitars, you add a little chorus or (maybe a little too much) reverb and it gets muddy. Not so with the original Emmons guitars I've played.
Easy to EQ with amp EQ and/or outboard EQ
Sounds killer through clean tube amps
Can easily get bright without becoming harsh
Can get 'jazzy' by backing off highs or goosing lo mids
MOST of them I've played are like that
SOME are extraordinary (one of mine is)
I have heard of guitars that just didn't have it; never met one in person. You walk in the room where a good player is honking on a push-pull and you notice it (in a GOOD way).
I've had a lot of guitars, but that special push-pull will be with me until I can no longer play it. _________________ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page

When I sold mine a few years ago it was the smart move and the right move for where my life was at. And I sold it to someone who wanted it a lot more than me and she has done wonderful things with it.
Things in my life have changed and....I sure wish I had it. At the time that I committed to sell it, I spent more time playing it to make sure it was well adjusted for the new owner and I started to find the magic in it that maybe had eluded me up 'til then.
No way I was going to back out of the deal but my seller's remorse started before it even left my house.

Yes, Karen... your Emmons sounds "damn" good. Tell us something we don't already know.
What we DO want to know, however, is when your much anticipated trip to the Austin TX area is going to occur? Huh? _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |
