I have a very nice piece of Cuban Mahogany that I am considering using to build a resophonic guitar. I have owned several resophonic guitars (Dobro and others) and find I prefer the tone of the older design that included a sound-well as apposed to the modern open sound-well design. Most of the older guitars were also made of plywood as apposed to solid tone woods. Does anyone have an opinion on building a solid wood reso-guitar with a sound well? Also what are your opinions about neck mounting? The older guitars used a dowel stick supported against the back - modern building style seems to favor a bolt on neck. Thank you for your thoughts.

The Beard R Model is such a guitar. It mimics the head on profile of the Chicago build Regal/Dobro but is a deeper body. It is a soundwell guitar although open between the upper and lower bouts.

The neck attachment is bolt-on although the exact method is proprietary as far as I know.

I own one. It's a killer guitar.

Hope this helps. Have fun with your build.

I have a modern 2006 built Dave King round neck Dobro that I specified solid Walnut, also wanted a soundwell & neckstick to the tail.
It has a beard cone & the shorter Allen cast tailpiece.

I am very happy with it ten years on.

My inspiration was the high end Walnut Dobros, which were largely presentation models in the 1930,s so solid wood has been an option with great success, all the other components temper the sound in one way or another.
