some of you may have this already, but for those who don't here's a recording of Buddy with Ray Price & the Cherokee Cowboys from Lynchburg, VA in 1965. I don't know the exact date, maybe someone can help. it was recorded by forum member Kenny Dail. the sound quality is not the greatest, but Kenny set his microphone right by Buddy's amp! you can even hear Buddy laugh a few times and say a couple words here and there. many thanks to another forumite John Steele for tracking me down and sharing this treasure. this is a zip file of mp3s, should download no problem

Yep, the mix is 99% Price-less so you can hear the steel.
That Buddy was able to sound this good under actual touring conditions just increases my admiration. |

I can't stop listening to San Antonio Rose. The band's stomp is deep and Buddy is swinging madly through all his perfect fills around Ray's vocal. An early Christmas gift. Thanks again. PS: It's an Emmons guitar, probably through a Standel amp. |

Hi J R,
Sorry you're having problems.
Go back and click on the link again, then click ONCE on the big green rectangular button that says "DOWNLOAD (73.14 MB)"
That should download a folder of sound files to your computer.
Good luck...it's worth it!

Thanks, Fish - I, too, was having issues but I followed your directions and got to hear it.
It's astounding! His tone and execution, his attack - and this isn't a studio setting, it's in the heat of battle. Just how good does he sound here???
Just when you think you might be getting the measure of the man and his talent something just knocks your socks off.
Many thanks, Scott! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

That little "whoops" he does in the same song at 0:43 (walking the 9th up to the V chord when it should've stayed in the IV) is something I've done a time or two myself! I think that sometimes, as musicians, we work so hard on putting feeling and expression into our music that we momentarily lose track of where we are. |

J.R. Did the download work? If not, no worries. Send me a message with your email address and I'll figure out a way to get this to you.
Roger - good to hear from you!
Yes, this is "astounding." It's a peek into a prime chapter in Buddy's career, one he thoroughly loved personally, and he is clearly comfortable and playing at the heights of his powers. Live performance is generally more free and open and wilder than the studio. Buddy is relaxed and uninhibited here and in complete command. This is like a live snapshot of the "Western Strings" studio album - one of Buddy's favorites - that the Cherokee Cowboys made, only with a live audience lighting a fire under Buddy, Ray and the rest of the band.
Thanks Scott!
p.s. I wonder if there is a photo anywhere from that same night? |

I'm amazed, not only by his artistry, but by how much Buddy is really playing! Of special note are the areas in each song where he's not playing anything at all (they're few and far between). This is because his dynamic control and expression are really outstanding, and I think that's a great lesson for those who think that compressors and gimmicks make us sound better. ![Cool](images/smiles/icon_cool.gif) |

Good point, Donny. Back in '65 all that sort of stuff lay somewhere in the future.
Quite apart from his seemingly flawless technique (or maybe because of it) the overwhelming impression his playing leaves is his supreme confidence in what he's doing.
Buddy adds power to the ensemble - it's what struck me all those decades later when he played with Don & Phil. There's an authority to everything he plays.
He even made mistakes with gusto! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Hi Erv and J.R. -
Try this:
1) Click ONCE on the large green rectangular button on near the top of the page that says "DOWNLOAD (73.14 MB)"
2) A folder called "Ray Price - Lynchburg VA 1965" will download to your computer's "Downloads Folder." If you can't find it, try searching your hard drive for these exact words: Ray Price - Lynchburg VA 1965
I hope this helps. If I could I would post these files in Dropbox for the forum, but that would get into rights and ownership issues, etc. Maybe the owner will post them another way. Good luck. |

Fish, I have not been able to get there. I will send you a PM with my email address. I have windows seven.
I am 75 and did not start on the computer till 10 years ago. So I am limited. I have seen Price in several concerts but never with Buddy playing. Would love to get this.
