I was looking at used Peavey Classic VT 212 amp, at my local music store. I thought about getting it and try to use as a back up amp. What I would like to know is, if anyone has ever used one for steel guitar applications? As always any input in the matter would be appreciated.

I own a 'Classic' 2-12 that I acquired on the local Craigslist and soon discovered that the weak spot in an otherwise fine amp were the factory installed 'CTS' speakers. My solution was to remove the stock units, block off one speaker port and install a single Eminence EPS-12C. This resulted in a considerable improvement in tone and a much needed reduction in weight as well. The tube driven power section tends to give these amps a slight edge over the all solid state Nashville and Session series IMHO.

A forum search should reveal the answer to your question is "yes", but as noted, they often get modded or a speaker upgrade. Some of the very many Peavey 212 models are 50w and some are 100w. You might opt for the latter for pedal steel to keep it as clean as possible.

There seem to be a number of variants with the Classic VT name. I got one cheap, years ago. 2 x 6L6 with a SS preamp. Two channel & 'automix' with a phaser built in.

I never got good enough steel sound with it. I cut it down to a head and used it in a rehearsal space with various speaker cabs where it served well enough. I found it to have a very narrow band of useful eq for steel. It is just not voiced for steel to suit my tastes. OTOH it is good enough to serve, in a pinch.
