Does the BB not like another matching device? I haven't had a chance to hook up the combo yet.

Hi Bob, I haven't tried the combination you're talking about but for a short while years ago, I did have a Steel Driver 2 and a Match-Bro hooked together. I found it affected the natural sound of the steel. The highs seemed to be thinner and more brittle. My guess is because of each unit having a preamp. That was on the red Franklin you have. Might be different with a Black Box. |

Thanks, Dale
I hope Brad is still around. The Black Box is always the first thing the pickup sees. I'm assuming Steel to BB to MB to VP and out??

I would mess with all combinations. I'd be curious to see how MB first into BB compared to BB into MB.
In one case you get a transistorized capture of the pickup then into the warming and smoothing of the tube. In the other case, you capture the pickup with that tube quality and then re-amplify/buffer with the solid state MB.
And maybe then whichever arrangement sounds cooler, then take whichever unit is in position #2 and then compare the sound with that buffer either before or after the volume pedal. Putting a buffer after a passive-pot volume pedal has its merits.
I'm a less-is-more kind of person generally trying to minimize the number of electronic components or stages in the signal path from pickup to speaker - down to the bare minimum and best sounding. But there are no rules, whatever sounds best is best.
I look forward to the reports and comparisons...

And Bob, short answer,
the BB is pretty flexible and impervious, a simple unity gain buffer that should play well with just about anything you put before or after it. I wouldn't hesitate to try it in any reasonable configuration. Even if you have it in a situation that allows you to hit it with hot, line-level audio that drives it up into audible distortion, that's not gonna hurt the Black Box.

Thanks, Brad!
I'll try all suggestions, even the BB after the VP if it sounds the best!
thx
