The Mary Halvorson Octet is a band I really enjoy being part of. These two videos are from a performance last month at The Stone in NYC. The first tune is "Spirit Splitter" (Octet no. 54), and the second, which contains an extended pedal steel solo, is "Fog Bank" (Octet no.56).
The musicians are
Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet), Jon Irabagon (alto saxophone), Ingrid Laubrock (tenor saxophone), Jacob Garchik (trombone), Mary Halvorson (guitar), John Hébert (bass), Ches Smith Smith (drums), and myself (pedal steel guitar)
A studio recording of the octet, all material written and arranged by Mary Halvorson, will be available sometime next month.

Thanks Jim, that was one of two songs where I got to take an extended solo. _________________ www.susanalcorn.net

Wow. I dug it, and had to listen to the second part. I thought it very urban and hip, fresh to the provincial ear.
Good review in the Times.
I also found Fog Bank, that I really liked. Boy, doesn't it make sense to have pedal steel in an ensemble? Versatility.
Seriously, I liked the chords and all on that piece, beautiful stuff. |
