Wondering what Rackmount Power Amps you’re all using?
Wanting to use with Revelation Tube Pre-amp and a couple of 15” Cabinets.

Hey Dale,
If you can find a Peavey DPC750, they are great.

OR

World 1.2 for LOADS of power

Currently using a Stewert PA-200B. Great sound but not a lot of power. If you could find a pair of them and setup in mono mode it would be great all in a single rack space. I would like to have a second for my setup.

Gentlemen, thanks for all the help... I’m looking into everything you’ve suggested...

The reason, I’m looking at all is that I just bought a new Crown XLS 1002, D Class amp... and seem to be getting the tiniest amount of distortion... I’m not sure of the source of it, but checking everything... I’m using 2 separate 15” Cabinets, which is something I haven’t done before, so have instrument cable hooked up to them and not Speaker cable... I know, some things you should just be aware of, but I wasn’t... hopefully when I re-hook everything up with speaker cable, that will solve it... if not then I’ll be looking at a replacement amp... BTW, I’m also pre-amping the Crown with a Revelation Tube Pre-amp... pretty sure I’ve got that hooked up correctly and think I have the levels correct as well, but will be looking at that again too... I don’t want to unnecessarily buy another amp and NOT solve my little issue.

Hi Dale,

You really need to connect your amp to speakers with speaker cable. Shielded instrument cable will not work as you have discovered. I can give you the engineering theory on why that is or just trust me on this. Get non-shielded, stranded cable in the gauge size recommended in the manual for the distance between the amp and speakers for the power supplied by your amp. If you are low on funds the local home center sells bulk power cable which will work just fine and is what I use.

Thanks Robert... I’ve poured over that manual and don’t see any reference on cable gauge... gonna go and hook her up now... Stay tuned... Very Happy

I do have Speak-on connectors on the Crown... would you suggest getting Speak-on/1/4” cables?

BTW... the cables helped

Hi Dale,

Here is a link to the technical manual from Crown (around page 15):

http://www.crownaudio.com/media/pdf/133472.pdf

It's likely more than you want to know about selecting wire. FWIW, I have been using 16 gauge, stranded, for short runs (15 feet or so) for many years without issue. I would go with the Speakon connectors if given a choice.

Good luck,
Robert

Thanks Robert... that certainly was NOT the manual I saw... I bought a couple of 25’ 14 gauge cables... I’m going through a patch-bay so didn’t get the SpeakOn... I guess I could go straight into the amp, except that I’m, (my wife) tired of spending money Laughing Laughing Laughing

I used a VHT 2/90/2 for several years. It is a killer all tube power amp. It is also heavy. I had it in a separate ATA shock rack mount. Ouch. I loved the sound but not the weight. I eventually went to the system pictured. It is much lighter. I really don't use this any longer as this was primarily my road rig

Steve,
I did the same thing and even though I loved the sound it was just too much to plumb up every time I wanted to use it.
