I first saw Gary when he was 14. The Carter Kids were amazing.

Great photo!
That's cool that Gary was playing a concert with Marty, he doesn't usually go out with the Fabulous Superlatives. _________________ Mark |

I was wanting to attend this concert, but wasn't able to afford tickets. I knew it was going to be good due to the fact that Gary was going to be there! To say that he is a fantastic steel guitarist is an understatement! |

In the summer of '68 we played an afternoon show at the Philadelphia Navy Yard with The Carter Kids. Gary was sitting on a Phila. phone book and playing a Baldwin cross-over. His older sister was like Leon Rhodes with long hair. They played Steel Guitar Rag and Panhandle Rag. . . "right off the Troubadours' album, note-for-note"
It seems that every great steel player started at a young age. I think Gary told me he began at age 9. Same thing with Paul, Herby Wallace, Lloyd etc. It's only an opinion, but I don't think you can begin in your 20s and ever get there.
By the way Walter, you're correct, Gary is a prince of a gentleman.

I have known Gary since 1976 (yes, 1976). Gary was a great steel player back then, and I was in awe of his ability. The Carter family were fantastic people and I was lucky enough to get to know them and get to jam with Gary, Jimmy, Cheryl, and Roy Dudley at some cookouts they had. Those were some memorable times for sure. Gary is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet and get to know. |
