There has been some talk of late concerning the DI in the Telonics combo. Since I have been using this DI lately in lieu of a microphone for both live performance and recording, I thought I might post some audio samples in case anyone was interested in hearing any examples.
I have never been a fan of DI's in amplifiers, as they have always sounded a bit sterile to me. And as such I have gotten some raised eyebrows from live sound techs and studio engineers when I suggest that we use it. But I have to say the reception has been very positive on all fronts. The consensus is that there is definitely some kind of "special sauce" in this DI recipe that sets it apart from others.
I initially started using the DI at other studios to give me a "safety net" of sorts when tracking steel live with the rest of the band. The idea was that if something needed changing or fixing later, the use of the DI would give me a sound I could more or less replicate in my own studio should the need arise. But I have come to rely on it exclusively, actually preferring it over the "usual suspect" mics that typically get put on the amp.
The following are two tracks from the new Jim Lauderdale album, "This Changes Everything". Both are classic-styled country shuffles, one up-tempo, and the other quite slow.
"I'll Still Be Around"- this steel track was done entirely at my studio. I had to play in church the morning it was initially tracked so I didn't get to Arlyn studio in Austin in time for the start of the session.

"It All Started And Ended With You"- this steel track was done entirely at Arlyn.

There is another thread here that contains a quote from Lloyd Green in which he talks about this DI:

Cool Gary! The Fender Twin sound is the "sound in my head" so I guess I gravitate towards it without thinking about it. Glad to know you think it's in the ballpark.
Thanks Danny! I cut these tracks with just a hint of reverb, but most of what you're hearing was added later. There was also a touch of delay added on the slow shuffle. _________________ Tommy Detamore

The real special sauce is in the signal coming through the wire plugged into the front of the amp. Nice |

I probably won't get a twin just because of weight and size.I love the tone though. |

Sure Dave. Here are some photos I took of the settings I used on the Lauderdale recordings:
Let me say that my settings when using the DI for recording are a bit different than what I use when playing live. For live use I typically run the bass closer to straight up, and the mid and treble levels higher (usually just within the white area that surrounds the knobs). _________________ Tommy Detamore
