I think the pickup on my Emmons s-10 has gone intermittantly shorted or open. Twice in the last 2 weeks when it has sat for a while and I start to play it, it has very little volume. I check all my cables & volume pedal-all good. When I hit it pretty hard with my fist near the pup it starts working OK. I took the pup out this morning and hooked it to an ohm-meter (24.87K) and when I tap on it, it opens up for a second and then goes back to the 24.8k. Sometimes the tap results in 15 to 13K and then back to 24.8K. I have limited knowledge of pickups but it does not seem that tapping on it would cause any change in resistance. I'm enclosing a couple of photos of the pickup top & bottom. It is probably the original pickup as it says 'Emmons' on it and has the number M5189 also. It mounts through the 4 holes in the pickup and does not look like any pickup on any of my others steels. So any suggestions on a replacement or getting it re-wound/repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Larry Robertson

Larry, I'd start with the easy stuff like a cold solder joint. Re-melt(re-solder)all the solder joints on the back of the PU. RP _________________ Emmons SKH Le Grande, '73 Fender P/J bass, Tick tack bass, Regal high strung, USA Nashville 112. |

What you have there is an Emmons Model 108N pickup. Dual coil.
Jerry Wallace at Truetone can check yours out and rewind it probably if needed. I don't see a link for him, but maybe a search will turn up his contact info. Edit: Found this thread with Jerry's email addy. http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=302477&highlight=jerry+wallace
Or, perhaps Tonealigner. |

Jerry Wallace still makes True Tone pickups but a couple months ago he told me he no longer re-winds of makes of pickups. Of course it would not hurt to check as things do change. I would trade you good pickup up for the 108N and take my chances on fixing it.

Larry, if you will send it to me I can try to fix it. It might be something simple. _________________ Emmons D-10, ST-10,LD-10 III, NV-112,Fender Deluxe Reverb. Authorized wholesale dealer musicorp.com! |

Doug, could you rewind it if required? Because of the mounting holes, it may be best to rewind it. I'm going to wait a few days and see what solutions show up on The Forum here. Thanks folks, Larry _________________ Website: www.Music2myEars.net

Larry it is a Humbucker and should read in the 20K range. The mounting plate under the pick-up has holes for this style and the single coil style. I can get it rewound by Harold Saunders if necessary, but it could be something simple. Let me know if I can help. PM me and we can exchange info. _________________ Emmons D-10, ST-10,LD-10 III, NV-112,Fender Deluxe Reverb. Authorized wholesale dealer musicorp.com!

That is the 108N model, humbucking pickup and can probably be repaired. It consist of two coils wound at 11K each with #41 wire. They are sensitive concerning the specs and takes little variance to create much difference. Harold Saunders of Asheboro NC wound pickups for me during my management years with the company and he continues to make and repair a variety of models. |
