Does anyone know who the steel guitarist is on “Six Pack To Go – George Strait
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08covy1Y1oE
I love the steel guitar solos and fills on this cut.
I couldn’t find any credits on All Music Guide, and I was so curious that I purchased the 4-CD George Strait box set. But when I opened up the 74-page booklet and found the session info for “Six Pack To Go†(March 17, 1986), there was no listing for the steel guitarist!
It sounds to me like it could be Buddy Emmons, but according to the booklet, Buddy didn’t start recording with George until 1991.
The other six recordings in 1986 list Paul Franklin as the steel guitarist, so perhaps he played on this session. Paul, if it was you, can you please chime in?
Greg Galbraith was listed on electric & acoustic guitar. So perhaps, if Greg remembers or kept a session diary, he may able to solve this little puzzle.
Thanks for your help.

I had the same question, Dave, and couldn't find any further info...

I got the impression it was Hank Thompson's session and he asked George to join him so maybe Hank picked the steel player. That was definitely a time period both before and after when Paul Franklin seemed to be the "go to" guy for George Strait's recordings. The plot thickens! |

According to the Bear Family Hank Thompson book 'The Pathway Of My Life 1966 - 1986 the steel player on this particular version of 'Six Pack To Go' was Hal Rugg. The session took place March 17 & 18th 1986 and the other musicians were Joe Bob Barnhill on guitar, Gregg Galbraith on guitar, Jack Ross on bass, Hoot Hester on fiddle, Mark O'Connor on fiddle, Clyde Brooks on drum and Pig Robbins on piano. _________________ 1974 Sho Bud "The Professional"; 2017 Show Pro D 10; BJS Bar "John Hughey"; Goodrich Steel Driver III; Live Steel Strings |

Hi Alex,
Thanks very much.
I love Hal's innovative E9th playing with Loretta Lynn and so many others.
As he shows on this cut, he was great on C6th too!

I think Altered Ego was released more like in early 80's or no earlier than 1980...remembering events and happenings from that era. I can't say for sure, but I think Hal was playing Franklin guitars about that time. |
