My Hot Rod Deluxe is 1st generation bought in 1995. Never been tampered with. Anyone have any suggestions. By the way, this is mainly for for my telecaster not for my steel |

You're asking on a steel guitar forum for suggestions for the best mod for your Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp for use with a Telecaster?
There are all sorts of discussions elsewhere.
What sort of modification do you want to make? _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Fromel Electronics has a tone upgrade kit for this amp. Not expensive and well worth doing. |

Changing the speaker will have the biggest effect. Keep in mind that most mods will detract from the value of the amp should you decide to sell it. If you are not 90% happy with the amp in stock form I'd say sell it and get the amp you really want. I've seen guys sink hundreds of dollars into modding what are essentially disposable amps and after they are done the amp is worth less than it was in the first place. |

I installed the Fromel mod in my recent HR Deluxe, it made a slight change in tone but not enough to make a difference for me.
Just be aware that the Fromel mod requires extensive parts removal from the "cheap PC bd" with your soldering iron. If you have the wrong wattage iron or do not have good soldering/de-soldering skills you will damage the PC bd traces and eyelets. That is NOT a maybe.
To even get to access to the rear of the PC bd you must remove every knob and NUT that fastens the pots to the top panel, then carefully bring the PC bd back towards you, during this process one or more of the pots can get hung up and easily can loosen a solder joint to one of the pots and you may not even know it until you put it all back together. The alternative is to remove the PC bd completely by un-wiring everything.
Can it be done ? of course it can...
I did it, I wouldn't do it again and electronics repair is my trade .
Speaker change will indeed make the biggest difference.
HRD's are bright amps , after the mod it will still be a bright amp, maybe not as it was before but yet still bright.
I love HRD's, but I also know they have some things about them that are inherent.
I don't say don't do the mod, I do say be cautious and good luck ! ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

The one I had was completely stock, except for the speaker swap and I felt it made a considerable improvement. It was still very bright, but the speaker change did open up the lower end a bit, to my ear. I can't say I loved it for PSG, but it was a great six string guitar amp! |
