That's a really good read, Ricky, thanks.
I recently tabulated my string gauges (in inches) and the maximum and minimum frequencies each string moves between (Hz) and found that the product of these (string gauge and frequency) fell between a result of 4 and 5 for each string. Except for my bottom B which went up to 5.25 or something on the raise. I think the result would have popped down under 5 if I allowed for the -12 cents that I temper that raise and if I nominated a .036 gauge instead of an .038
I don't know what I was hoping to discover, it seemed a mighty profound discovery at the time , but hasn't improved my life any (and I still use a .038 )
The information Ricky linked to is far more interesting .... _________________ Luke Drifter on Facebook

Jeremy you have discovered Threlfall's Law. To wit:
The product of the frequency shift and the gauge of the string = 42 'er I mean 4.2.
It is now in common use but at the time of it's discovery people were playing pedal steels with only 10 or so strings, and Adams's law that Pedal steels sound best with 42 strings was still waiting to be discovered.
btw i loved living in west australia back in the day. One day i shall visit again. |

That's some really strange math, Jeremy. String gauge in inches times vibration frequency in Hz. I would never have thought of doing that.
Derrick, I would use .014 for the high E, and .020 for the G#. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
