I’ve decided to use up some of mismatched woods just to get them out of the way. These are not blemished sets but are mastergrade sets that aren’t bookmatched from top to back. I usually slice/resaw all of my own sets from very carefully selected, dried and quartersawn boards. For more info just google bookmatching instrument woods. I’m usually left with a top or back that doesn’t have a match. Aeathetically, a well made weissenborn’s top and back should be from 4 consecutive cuts so they match. Milling my own wood like this saves me money and helps keep my costs down, but it does leave me with a lot of beautiful tops and backs like these, and they are too rare and beautiful to waste. It’s usually incredibly hard to tell if they are bookmatched or not from top to back. But it’s kind of dishonest, (in my book) not to disclose that. I have enough of these sets to make 10 instruments or so.
All of these are built exactly as my other full priced models. I have built over 280 weissenborns and I'm still a one man show and everything is built by me. Bracing is tap tuned and scalloped to produce the best tone. Everything is built in a humidity controlled environement. Everything is solid wood, no laminates.
So… this listing is for a Honduran mahogany Style 1 model Instrument #284. Mastergrade materials. Beautiful in all ways with a super nice warm mahogany tone. Mahogany is an excellent weissenborn wood. It’s super even across all the strings, meaning that it’s not mid tone heavy, bassey or bright. Instead just a nice even beautiful tone. Great volume and very good sustain. Mahogany has long been a staple in guitars and weissenborns. The “so called†original weissenborns from the 20’s-30’s were made exclusively with Mahogany and Koa.
This mahogany is exquisite. Very nice tight, straight grained. Beautiful color that will continue to darken to a nice brick red color over time. This is some of the nicest mahogany I’ve ever had and I’ve built over 150 mahogany weissenborns. I use a super nice, natural looking satin lacquer finish over shellac. This process, other than French polish, is still the best sounding and most durable finish available for instruments and has been used for over 100 years.
