Hi what do you guys put under Neath your pickups for tension? I have foam under mine right now but it's not enough is it ok to run the screws through a spring? Thanks Clint |

What kind of guitar? Most of them DO have either springs between pickup and body (and around the screws) or between mounting tray and body. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Maybe find some stiffer foam. FWIW, the last Mullen I had came to me with factory installed GL pickups. They were mounted with wood screws direct into the body with foam underneath and no pickup plate of any kind.
When I installed original s/c's from Mullen, I used springs under the screws along with the foam. I don't remember where I got the springs. I know I have some from empty ballpoint pen cartridges.
I don't think it matters. If you like a firmer mount, and/or possibly more precise adjustments, either stiffer, thicker foam or screws through springs will work fine. |

My guitar is a Mullen RP with Mullen sc has foam under it but not enough. Will probably try pen springs, was just curious to see what works good for others. One other thing how close to the strings do you want a pickup? |

Here is one source for pickup springs if you don't have any old pens around:

The thickness of two US quarters is considered by some to be a good starting point. The best spot may vary from there.
On a totally non-musical note: Personally, I just hate those cheap, spring-loaded pens and never have any around.
Good luck with your project. _________________ "For every expert, there is an equal and opposite expert." -- Arthur C. Clarke |

That's a minimum distance. I find many pickups can be too hot that close, and tone improves as you get closer to to three quarters/5mm _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Various types of small springs are available at Lowes and possibly Home Depot as well. Normally found in those specialty drawers in the hardware dept...Note: Installing the springs can be a real PITA!! My method is to use a small dab of epoxy on the end of each spring that is closest to the pickup, this will hold them in place while you line up the screws with the holes in the body. There is nothing more frustrating than installing the pickup only to discover that one (or more) of the springs has become detached from the mounting screw(s) and is floating loose on the underside of the pickup. |

Usually the spring will stick to the bottom of the pickup. |
