How rediculous. Clearly, it's just a stock amp, not tubes. The underpaid folks these places hire are shamefully ignorant of products they sell and of a professional's needs. However, these chains really only sell to beginners and impulse buyers. I wouldn't believe any of these chains have anything to offer a real pedal steel guitarist, nor does anyone employed by them, including the CEO down to the janitor know what a steel guitar is.

A good friend who owns a nice guitar shop in Colorado claims you have to flunk the aptitude test to be a greeter at WalMart to secure a gig at Sitar Sender.

The nice thing about tube amps is, like they have visible tubes eh?

I don't buy anything at guitar center except an occasional cable... and that's only because craigslist is too risky for cables. I never buy new cars, and I hardly ever buy new music equipment...

I remember when they first came out. A good friend of mine who owned a music store in Gonzales, La. had just came back from St. Louis and the ISGC. He told me he went to the Peavey show room and saw Lloyd Green demonstrating the amp. He told me the amp was solid state. No tubes.

That old saying, "ignorance is bliss" may well be to our advantage when applied to Guitar Center (Sam Ash as well). Since their target demographic appears to be 15 to 25 year old "shredders" (six string players whose main goal apparently is to make their guitar sound as much like a bench grinder as possible), used items not specifically pertaining to this group can most often be obtained at bargain prices. Over the years have discovered many bargains at our local stores. Recently purchased an early '80's Peavey bass cab from GC loaded with a 1502-4 BW (paper cone) for $50.00. Cab was rough but only wanted the speaker anyway, gifted the cab to a friend.

The only time I have dealt with Guitar Center was on used amps. They will ship from one store to another at no cost and the amps I was interested in were on the east coast.
By the way, they did an excellent job on packaging.

Guitar Center is what it is.

Do you go into McDonald's and get upset because they don't have good steak, and the worker doesn't know anything about cooking steak? No, because it's ridiculous to expect them to know anything about stuff they don't sell.

Yes, they should be able to see that this is clearly not a tube amp, but beyond that it's not their bag.

Who said anything about being upset? My post was merely an observation. I couldn't care less. Smile

Oddly enough , I remember going to Guitar Center in the Dallas area , don't recall which one, and they actually had a GFI in the store. Of course this was when Gene was still alive and building them in Arlington. Nevertheless I was surprised.

But I went right down the road to see Charlie Norris @ Norris Family Music. His store was always loaded with new and used steels , amps, seats and etc........Sure miss Charlie ......Of course as most know, but some may not, he and Junior Knight along with Gary Hogue started the TSGA. Which is still a wonderful organization and being run very well today.
Sorry for the rant

It's an irritating place, and I have a hard time with the loud obnoxious music. If you Need a refund, it's in the form of a check, even if you pay cash. It's on a bank that charges me to cash the check. I hate the place, and would rather pay more and support a local store when possible. I don't expect them to know anything about steel, but in fairness to them, I don't know anything about the crappola they dig.

When I ordered my ShoBud LDG there was only one store in the Atlanta area that sold Pedal Steel guitars.
This was Rhythm City in Buckhead who was a ShoBud dealer. There were only two stores that sold PSG strings.
When owner of Rhythm City (George Luther) passed away the store was moved and became one of the first Guitar Center stores.
I then was forced to drive an hour and 15 minutes to Marietta buy strings (twice a year).
A friend that I had played with became their guitar tech, and he knew his trade, as well as being a good guitar player.
Now there are none of the old techs left who I trusted with my guitars.
I don't even think you can find a Carter Starter in stores here now. Thank goodness for the internet.

When Guitar Center and Sam Ash opened shop in Columbus, they pretty much wiped every mom and pop music store out of business. There are two left that I know of, and they have been able to stay afloat because they do a lot of custom work as well as top notch service. We also have two music go round stores. Every once in a while a cool piece of gear floats through those stores, but not that often.

Thats funny Tommy White but mostly true !

I buy from the USED side all the time, I use their lack of knowledge to my benefit, I know that sounds really sick, but hey, they are the ones pricing and advertising stuff, not me ! But be warned , 1 out of 9 are pretty smart and know whats in front of them.

$329 for a N400 is pretty darn good regardless if they call it a tube amp or not ! Especially because it has a 100% return with shipping costs within 45 days to ANY GC.

Just bought a Session 500 for $160, shipped from Chicago to Phoenix and is in very good shape. Not sure if they knew what they had when they priced it!

I had a Nashville 1000 shipped across the country at no expense to me. I took one look at it, and asked for a refund. It looked like someone threw up on the amp. Got my money back, no questions asked.
