I loved the JBL's I've had as well as the Black Widows.
I have a 15 cab in the makes to use with a 50 watt Bassman head ( normal channel) I am currently using a 12 but have the urgent desire to jump to a 15.

I don't like shrill or too string in the mids. Weight not really a factor as it is a separate open back cab , 22x22 x 11.

So tell me what you guys and gals are using and how you like them.

Maybe I'll even buy one from one of you if it's the right one and you have it for sale.

Tony, I have used several 15s, BWs and JBLs. My favorite is the JBL in my old 1978 Session 400. I don't like the 12s as well, although I do use a N112 sometimes.

The Jensen Mod 15 in my seafoam green Twin sounds delicious.
I like the Black Widows, and the Sica is also good.

I have an original Jensen (built in Chicago)50 watt, 8 0hm bass speaker that has a very balanced response for steel. I was using it in an open back cab and loved the tone but needed more power handling so I exchanged it for A BW 1502-4. With a 50 watt head however it should sound very good indeed.

My Session 500 has the factory BW,and my Custom 15 Twin Reverb has the stock speaker, which is supposed to emulate a JBL (D140,I think).Love'em both.

You should seriously consider the Telonics 15 - Neo magnet, this is one fabulous speaker.

Tony, is that Bassman an 8 ohm amp? I know that some 15" speakers aren't available as 8ohm. I have BWs, Sicas, Telonics, Jensen, and Standel branded 15" speakers...In my Bassman, I ended up with the Sica, cause I liked the midrange best.

I echo this Tony. I recently made the step with this light weight speaker for my Evans 500 FET. Couldn't be happier! It is the closest thing to a JBL

Tony, I had an early 70’s Twin that I bought new that had 12” Jensen’s in it, and though I like the Heavy beast, I could never get what I wanted out of it... I have since used strictly Session 400/500’s and for the $$, feel that they’re a real bargain... My 1976 400 has a shallow basket BW with the Spiderweb on the back and the 500 looks like just a regular 15” BW... Love them both... love them even more now that I’m feeding a Lexicon MPX1 with a Parallel Reverb setting, through a Revelation Tube Pre-amp.

thx all.. looks like I am going with a stock BW 1502-4 which to me is like an industry standard along with the JBL. I'll use it in a custom build cab under either a 67 Showman head (4 ohm) or a Bassman Head (4 ohm).

yeah I know, Showmans were 8 ohms but mine has the period correct 4 ohm OT. Cool

I think it would be worth checking out a JBL 15". They have a very particular sound that might be what you are looking for. It will give you a significant bump up in headroom also.

In the for-what-its-worth department, since you mentioned a Bassman head, I tried jumping the channels together on my Bassman 70 for the first time, and my 2x12 cabinet put out sound I never new it was capable of. Hard to imagine needing a 15, but then I play E9 only. Jumping those channels gives me huge punchy full range sound out of the Bassman.

There are 4" drivers with good bass performance these days. They just don't move much air.

The only "problem" with 12" is that they're more likely to be designed for six-string guitar, where 15" are more likely to have a response curve better fitted to steel. An awful lot of the personality of a speaker is in the frequency range from 1K to say, 5-7k.

I have a little Fender Super Champ XD. I can run it through the 10" it came with, a Marshall 2x12 or the 15" EPS-15C that came in my Steelaire. The 15" just articulates better without being "etched" ( meaning it still has some high end rolloff ).

My favorite is the Altec 418B. It's very similar to a JBL D-130F but warmer and smoother. Very well balanced from top to bottom, clear highs and I don't find any weird midrange bumps. The top end is where the magic happens. It has a beautiful subtle shimmer that really pleases my ear.

Given how beamy 15's can be I'm really surprised that steel players don't use 10's more.
