I have a Shields Clap-Trap 12 string pickup that needs to be rewound (unfortunately damaged).

Does anyone know the ohms rating for this pickup? It is the two-row adjustable pole version.

Thanks.

Tom ,
You might want to contact Bob H. .....He's been building similar pickups and probably has the scoop on what the rating is for this pickup ....Jim

The crap traps I checked where in the .022 to .024 range for the 12st pickups.

It may be a good idea to rewind both bobbins so they are even. So much depends on tension and guage when it comes to the sound and humbucking capabilities of two coil pickups.

Thanks for the reply Bob.
I didn't realize they were wound that high (dark).

That is not a dark winding. The numbers are different between 12 st and 10st pickups. The importance of the ohms number is as a ratio along with inductance. A 12 st pickup at .022 is the about same sound as .017 10st pickup as long as the pickups are similar types.

I could never figure out the rhyme or reason behind the inductance numbers used by the late Bill Lawrence ( may he rest in peace )....Nothing at all like your typical pickup company ....STILL GREAT PICKUPS !!....Jim

Ohms, inductance, resistance only have meaning in relationship with each other. Using ohms as a description of a pickup is like describing the size of a room by saying it is 8 feet.

Since magnet size, magnet strength, wire diameter, number of turns, distance from the strings, size of the strings, and probably some more variables that I don't know of (or maybe know of but aren't thinking of now) will all change the output of the pickup, I think most metrics will fail, but measuring the inductance sounds closer to a valid metric than does DC resistance, which mainly just tells you how long the wire is. That's only universal if everyone uses 42ga wire and the same size magnets.
