Topic: Question Regarding FX Loops in Sarno Preamps |

If I wanted to use effects pedals, such as distortion, delay, etc. can these be used in the fx loop effectively? I might want to use a Sarno for all forms of electric guitar and steel, but need lots of variation in tones. The basic clean tone is superior, but how do I add distortion, fuzz and modulation?

*A* rule of thumb is to put "gain" appliances between the guitar and preamp. This includes compressors and distortion boxes. "Modulation" F/X go in the F/X loop - reverb, chorus, flange, delay.
The reason for it is that the designers probably expected a six string guitar to be plugged into things that mess with your gain, where modulation F/X are not expected to change the gain structure at all.
But this is the sort of rule that's made to be broken. I put my "distortion" in the F/X loop
so I can switch it out from a switch box. |

| It would depend on which Sarno pre-amp that you owned. The 'Octal V8' is not equipped with an effects loop (the 'Classic' may not be either I am not certain, check the website for features). The 'Tonic' which is currently out of production was my favorite Sarno unit and featured two effects loops, the rear for line level effects, the front for stomp boxes. |

Thanks, guys. I assumed the above answers but have never used a stand-alone preamp like the Sarno. I'm thinking about buying a Revelation or one of the older Jerry Garcia modded ones.
