Played Guitar when I was in my teens and twenties. Stopped playing as life got in the way. Picked it up 40 years later when I retired. Purchased a Rogue lap steel to give it a try.
Also bought Don Campbell's book Lap Steel Guitar Easy Instruction. Have no idea what strings came on the Rogue. According to the book I turned (1st to last)E,B,G#,E,B,E. Actually tuned the low E to a pitch pipe and tuned the balance to that string. Much difficulty getting in tune but now I have it. Have a new set of strings, GHS for C6 tuning, These are marked 015,017,020,026,DY30,DY36, but they have no note indications. What notes do I tune to. I have found several C6 recommendations, and I am totally confused. Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated. |

I'd use low to hi, C E G A C E on 6 string C6 tuning with those gauges.
Here's some reference for you from right here on the forum store. A coupe gauges are just a tad lighter, but yours should work just fine for this C6 tuning. Click on the link to open. http://www.steelguitarshopper.com/JP-L6C/
....and welcome. |

There are several forum members who give instruction on C6 lap steel . .
If you're starting from scratch, which appears you are, Troy's lessons are excellent.

For certain change the strings to the C6 Gauges ,
The Rouge is 21 scale , so while you have the strings off, before installing the new ones.
Measure the distance from the business side of the nut to the top of the Bridge saddles.
This needs to be 21" to top center of the Saddles, -- also as straight across as possible,
Heights are up to you.
This should make your mid string CHIME Point be over the 12th fret.
Rouges actually sound decent if set up better than out of the box.
Welcome to C6 Steel Guitar.

Thank you all for your quick and helpful replies.
The information will go a long way in eliminating my confusion. I knew I could count on forum members. I have used other forums myself both in asking and replying and you always find a bunch of good folks. |

For tuning, unless you enjoying tuning to a given string, I'd recommend an inexpensive Snark tuner, or get a tuner for your smart phone. I use both. |

Feel free to ask questions here. We're happy to help. C6th is a great tuning for starting on lap steel. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Lee, I use a Snark tuner on my acoustic guitars but I don't see a way to clamp it on the lap steel. The clamp does not open up wide enough. Have a different brand that can lay flat on the lap steel but not sure it is really registering properly. Will have to try that again. |

I have that same issue with my Snark. I clamp it to the phono plug of the guitar cable. |

As for the tuner, clamp it to a tuning key...
C6 is a great tuning, and E7 is also a good one. It might be more friendly to you coming from guitar. _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)

I may, in fact, be nuts. However, I am screwed onto the right bolt... Jesus! |

One more question (for now but I reserve the right to ask more)--I have a set of strings for C6 tuning and I have a Mel Bay book ordered based on C6 tuning. In the meantime I will play as tuned with the book I have. The tuning is (1st to 6th)e,b,g#,e,b,e. Can anybody tell me what that tuning is? There is nothing noted in the book.
I have played successfully but not fluently Amazing Grace and Down in the Valley. I think I'm going to really like this.
c IS? there is nothing stated in the book.
I have picked successfully but not fluently Amaing Grace and Down in the valley. |

It's the exact same notes as if you were making an E chord on a standard guitar. _________________ Some songs I've written |

Bruce,
Just to confuse you a little more, there are small additions to each of these tunings you are considering which in my opinion extend the range of both. On C6th I use a G string on top (first string) and it sounds like this..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTmg9o1UXOo
When using the E tuning you have at present, I use a G# string on top (first string) and it sounds like this.....

Good luck with your playing, start off with what you have and venture forward from there.
James. |
