Here's my latest project completed.... an eight-string with two knee levers and a palm pedal!
I purchased an SX lap steel ( a really excellent guitar BTW, well made and nicely finished) which I then strung and tuned to E7th. Stage one was to add a six-string Deusenberg Multibender, with a micro-bridge at each side two carry the two extra strings, plus fit a custom-built roller nut at the other end.
Stage two was to run two pull cables through the body to knee levers, each with travel stops to prevent over-stressing the cable connections. The two knee levers took care of the G# and B raises.
Finally, stage three was to fit one extended lever to the Multibender, enabling a half-tone drop on the D. This setup gives me my I, IV and V over any fret. At this point, I also added front and back cover panels, to hide the mechanisms and give a 'console' appearance.
Bear in mind that the superbly engineered 'Bender mechanism has built-in tuning stops, saving me hours of work and frustration.
Project complete, it all works well, and with eyes closed, you'd think it could be a regular PSG!
What next? Well, I'm looking to take the inevitable next step, a long overdue move up to a starter PSG. Anyone fancy a swap or p/ex? 😀
PS: I'm assuming that this is still a Lap Steel, let me know if I've crossed the divide and I'll re-post it on the Pedal Steel section!

No, the third and fourth are raised by the knees, the fifth lowered by the palm. Sorry, not tekkie enough to do sound samples! |
