When the time for that grip comes in the tune, just look at your thumb & fingers, line them up with the strings, pick the grip, then try to catch up with the rest of the band...
That's how I do it [This message was edited by Ray Minich on 20 August 2004 at 11:19 AM.] |

All you need to do is practice, practice, practice. The 6 8 & 10 string grip is very important for chordal melody.

Calvin, I use to have the same problem. still miss that group now and then, but not near as much. I practiced on just the 8,6, and 5 group to the 10,8,and 6 group, back and forth from one to the other. repetition is what helped me the most. now I can go from 3,4,5 down to 10,8 and 6 and very seldom miss. you'll get it, it's just like everthing else about playin the steel, lots of practice.

I had the opposite problem. I started out with a pentatonic tuning that had lots of wide grips. When I switched to E9th, the biggest challenge was picking the adjacent string grips 3,4,5 and 4,5,6 cleanly. [This message was edited by Bobby Lee on 21 August 2004 at 10:04 AM.] |

Be glad you don't play a Universal tuning. Your 10-8-6 is my 9-8-6. Jumping back & forth between 9-8-6 and 8-6-5 is a continual challenge. A work in progress. |
