Thanks

I read that too, several times, and I'm the type that looks for a scientific explanation. I used to play bass although sadly I don't have the amp any more to compare - I play steel through a couple of Fender 112s.
I think what a bass amp has is a flatter frequency response (certainly the Fender has a lot of built-in presence even when the controls look flat - can't speak for Peaveys etc. A friend once had a fancy guitar amp that was sold as having a flat response like a hi-fi and it sounded dull.)
Also superior intermodulation distortion. On a bass amp you need to be able to play chords that stay clean (if you play fat low chords on a regular guitar you're more likely to want them dirty), and on the steel cleanliness is all.
So I can see in theory why the bass head, maybe with 12" rather than 15" speakers would sound good. If I'm talking rubbish, please say.
To answer the original question, I would think that what goes for pedal goes for lap also. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Bass amps (most) work great with Pedal steel, I see no reason it wouldn't work for non pedal too. I'm using a Carvin BX500 bass amp and before that a GK MB200 bass amp. The Carvin is much better as it as a 12AX7 preamp tube in it. Years ago (1960) I had a Fender Bassman amp (with 4 10" speakers) that I used for Bass, Lead guitar and lap steel - worked great on all 3.
However, some bass amps are "too sterile". I tried a Mark Bass solid state amp and hated it as it was "too clean" or "sterile" as I call it.
I don't need the 500 watts that my Carvin is capable of, but the sound is terrific. Even our lead guitar player who is a "must have Fender tube amp" type likes the Carvin BX500 and told me it was the best sound I've had (and we've been working together for 15 years). |

Thanks guys, I am playing through a Nashville 1000 with the Ken Fox modds and a Mod reverb tank with my Remington 8 string, but was wondering about the 8 string through possibly a Carvin BX series. |

Most lap steel players like a little bit of hard-working tube hair (since they don't play microtonal intervals, they sound just fine), I can't help but think one of the littler Fenders would be more pleasant. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
