This might sound mad but... would there be a way to get a pickup manufacturer to create a pickup that would slip under the strings in front of your original pickup? without routing out your guitar neck?
I'd love to try something like a P-90 on my Excel or maybe more of a classic sho~bud pickup vibe.

Anyone tried this? i know if it could work? theres a lot of independent pickup manufactures in the UK.

I know there was some talk of using these or a similar model of these for this purpose. Hope it helps .

Sierra has made interchangeable pickups. Example -- http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=273309.

What a fascinating idea. I think something like the lace is probably your best bet. What I'm not sure of is whether you'd be able to get an accurate P-90 sound out of a low profile pickup.

That said, a dog-ear P90 is only just over 22mm high. What's the distance between the strings and neck on your steel? If there's enough clearance, there's plenty of guys who could wind you a custom 10 string P-90, You could probably shave off nearly half the thickness with stronger (possibly neodymium) bar magnets and shorter poles.

I'd like to buy one of these. Maybe if enough of us wanted one, Jon would build a few more...

Thanks Cartwright. Life is a bit upside down and will be for several months so a project like this is not on the agenda.

Sentell is my choice right now. Talk with him and get your specs straight (my need was for a 12 string guitar) and he'll make exactly what you need. Lace has no interest in custom work.

btw--I'm not understanding why a 21 mm high pickup has even been entered into the discussion. A brief glance at a steel guitar rules that out.
