I recently bought a cheap lap steel "new" and the volume is low on all strings especially on the smallest string . I changed the string but that didn't help . I used a new cord and that didn't help . I guess I need a different pickup . Mine is a P90 or something like that . not a humbucker . Any recommendations ?

There are a lot of issues it could be. Have you tried adjusting the pickup height? Or the poles? If they're all raised high, it's still more likely to be either a bad solder connection or a faulty pot than the pickup itself.

Unless you're expecting to get the same level of output from a modern pedal steel, in which case that's just not going to happen with the stock pickup.

Thanks Mr. Miller , I've adjusted the height and pole on the little string. I may try resoldering or replacing the pickup if I can find one that might work. Thanks
