Here's "They'll Never Take Her Love From Me" off my all-time favorite country CD... the late Doug Sahm's "The Return of Wayne Douglas". Tommy Detamore's kickin' pedal steel is wall-to-wall on 12 tracks...outstanding! Tommy has some really cool licks throughout - I'll have to admit to my best guess in places i.e. check out the counterpoint lick at about 2:00 on the youtube video (bottom of Page 7 on the tab). As always, comments, corrections, and slicker ways to play things are always welcome. Enjoy!
Here's the youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiCKxWhRQV4
***And if you see this, Tommy, (1) hope you had a good winter and (2) hope the tab is "kinda close" ***

Jeff- the you tube video and tablature is awesome. I am very new to psg and find this combination of media giving me hope. I may not be able to take this information and fully benefit, but I see the light. This is powerful as a learning opportunity. Of course I am at a point where every bit of information is a nugget to me. |

Excellent, Jeff, - thanks for all the great work you do for all of us here!
I was just wondering - nit picking`(!) - in back up lick #2 right at the beginning, do we hear open strings? What you have tabbed out works just fine, but still, there seems to be an open string lick. Perhaps at the 10th. fret, string 5 and 6 or starting at the fifth fret? Whaddyathink?
Again, your tab works just fine as it is, - so this is just a perhaps nerdy detail.
Thanks,
Steinar |

Thanks, Steinar! Nerdy details are ALWAYS welcome...I treat this as a big puzzle and sometimes I need help with the answer sheet haha. Are you looking at the lick immediately after the lyric "the gods would see" on page 2 of the tab? |

Hi Jeff.
It`s the lick after "hopes and cares." Listening to Tom Brumley for years opened my ear to open strings.
Thanks,
Steinar |

Definite closer. I slowed it down and what about using 5 and 4 with C pedal and 4 open, sliding frets 8-9-10-9-8?
Will experiment som after work today.
I lived in your state from 1971 - 4, by the way, attending college, - up in Hanover. Wonderful state, good people, and beautiful nature. |

Jeff:
Thanks so much for two reasons:
1. The awesome job of tabbing that you did.
2. Putting me onto this wonderful album. I found it on the internet and am ordering it today. Tommy's steel is great and the wonderful fiddle of Bobby Flores is all over it. Below is a link to a page where one can listen to snippets of all of the songs. Just click the play arrow.

Wow Jeff! Thanks fellers for the kind remarks
When I get more time I'm gonna look through this, but meantime maybe I can shed a little light on what I think is the lick in question. (The one after "Hopes and cares...")
That was done starting with strings 2 and 3 at the 8th fret, with string 2 lowered a whole tone then released. Next you pick strings 3 and 4, then 2 and 3 again and lowering the second a whole tone. Then strings 4 and 5 then pedal A in and out.
As far as the counterpoint lick at "Hold her now...", that starts at fret 15 hitting strings 4 and 8, sliding back to 14 and hitting 4 and 7, then sliding back to 13 and hitting 4 and 6, then sliding back up to 15....
Something like that. Way easier to play than to describe! _________________ Tommy Detamore

Just listened to the intro...the second and third "hits" (fret 4 and 5) have an additional note on the bottom. It is the dominant 7th tone, achieved by splitting the 6th string whole tone lower with the B pedal. You could also use the 7th string half tone raise if you had it.
Also, towards the end of the first staff, when it goes to the fifth fret, a third note on the 8th string is added on the bottom of that hit to create triads for the three slid and ringing chords....When you get down to the third fret, you lower the 8th a half tone... _________________ Tommy Detamore

Dang Jeffro you're fast!
If you don't have the split, or don't raise the 7th, there are a couple other ways to get those same triads...
You know, on the very first hit of the intro, there is a bottom note on that one too. On the 6th string, with the B pedal "quick pedaling" up with the A pedal.
Pardon me while I learn my own licks.... _________________ Tommy Detamore

Tommy, - thanks so much for clearing this up, and Jeff - kudos for your tab work.
Talk about attending grad. school lick-wise!
Tommy, I may have a D10 grayish(charcoal) Zum that you once sold to a guy in Norway. Great instruments!
Thanks,
Steinar |

You are quite welcome Steinar. Glad to be of help.
The one I sold to Dag Wolf I presume? That is a GREAT guitar. I was so stupid to sell it. Another "one that got away"...
Happy to know it is in good hands! _________________ Tommy Detamore

Hi Tommy.
Yes, it`s the one that Dag Wolf bought from you many years ago. I got it last year. Having only played old ZB guitars for the last 10 years, it was quite a change.
Dag himself - the ultimate ZUM stalwart - now has become a p/p apostle and plays Emmons!
Times they are a-changing!
Thanks,
Steinar |

I have followed a similar path. Zums for 18 years, Carters for 10, now back on '60's PP 's.... ! _________________ Tommy Detamore
