I had the pleasure of attending the recent Maui Steel Guitar Festival with my wife, and it was a treat in so many ways. During three days, we heard great sets from Alan Akaka, Bobby Ingano, Greg Sardina, Jeff Au Hoy (the latter two played sets using their tricones), Patty Maxine and a host of other terrific players, several of whom were from Japan. Prior to the Festival, Alan and Greg conducted a steel guitar “campâ€, during which those attending were able to soak up as much as possible from these masters. In addition, there were workshops scheduled for ukulele players, hula lessons, those wanting to learn about Band-in-a-Box, and more.
On another level, the Festival also contained an Open Stage program, which afforded players from around the world an opportunity to get up on stage to perform. I was fortunate to get a chance to play four songs. For someone who doesn’t play in public very often, it can be challenge. But I had a blast! Here’s a link to a video of “Silhouette Hulaâ€. Mahalo for watching.

Wow, sounds great Ralph. I was able to attend last year and it was a wonderful experience. I made some good friends as well, including your mean-lookin' bass player! _________________ "The Masher of Touch and Tone"

Thanks all. Jim, the bass player was Larry Holu, who did a tremendous job accompanying several steel guitar players all through the Festival. Tom, the Coronet sounded great and had many admirers.
For several moments during Greg Sardina's set on Saturday night, the music and four part harmonies almost made me feel like we were at the Tapa Room... |
