Submitted Photo Joe Turner is an organizer of the Southern Steel Guitar Convention and will headline its next event.
A couple times a year, steel guitarists and other artists join together under one roof for the Southern Steel Guitar Convention.

The event began in 1987 in Belvedere and was once held four times a year.

“Now, resolved to twice a year, May and November, the (convention) attracts hundreds of folks for a weekend of great fun with good music, good food, and friends, old and new,” the event’s website states.

The convention is held on the third weekend of each May and November at the Belvedere Jaycee Building, 98 Johnson Road, Belvedere.

Jam nights are held Saturdays from 7 to 11 p.m., while the convention happenings occur Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For more information, visitwww.southernsteelconvention.com, or call organizers Joe Turner at 864-352-6581 or Jerry Reece at 803-593-0454.

May event

Turner is also headlining the next convention May 14 and 15.

He discovered the steel guitar at an early age and bought his first one in 1973.

The musician has performed as a back up for acts such as Nat Stuckey, Bill Phillips, Michael Twitty, Marty Haggard and more.

He won the International Steel Guitar American Idol award in 2008.

Turner organizes the convention with Jerry Reece, according to the convention’s website.

November event

Russ Hicks is slated to perform Nov. 19 and 20.

Hicks’ accomplishments include being inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame and performing on the “Hee-Haw” TV show.

His induction ceremony was during the International Steel Guitar convention for 2011 to 2012. A video tribute to Hicks was shown that featured tributes from the likes of Connie Smith, Ronnie Milsap and Charlie McCoy.

Stephanie Turner graduated from Valdosta State University in 2012. She then signed on with the Aiken Standard, where she is now the features reporter. She primarily covers health topics, arts and entertainment, authors and restaurants.

Joe is not only a great picker, he is a great person.
We have been friends for some 30 years.

I will be picking before or after (hopefully not) Joe.

We all have a "large" time at the Southern Steel Show.

I have been involved with this show since it began back in the 80's.
