With Norm's permission I will answer his way of blocking. He learned his method of blocking many years ago from Vance Terry, and it is a bit different than todays way. He uses his thumb blocking the string he has just picked and follows up the strings. It is very clean, and no noise that I can hear. He showed me his method many years ago, and believe me it is not easy to learn after palm blocking for many years. |

when i was learning, blocking wasn't something people got all het up about.
obviously you don't want strings ringing if it makes it sound bad. so don't let those strings ring!
any way you can do that is good. |

I think it's easy to see she's doing 3 kinds of muting! Along with bar-tracking, you can see both her thumb pick and finger picks go back to resting on a string after she's picked it, and you can see her palm resting on (edge-muting) the bass strings.
The vast majority of players I've see use both these methods, as well as bar-tracking. |

I dig her very lady-like deployment of the RKR lever at the very end--by using her hand! That is some unusual technique. |

Apart from the blocking discussion, what is going on with that doubling? Is it just my ears or is there a second steel on the track? I hear Barbara and the six string lead guy but it seems like there's a shadow steel in there. Maybe it's just the guitar player but I don't think so. |

Bill: No doubling on there, but I think she's just using some fast triplets that make it sound fuller.
John: No switched necks..that's C6th she's playing on the inside neck.

Thanks, Joachim. Had not seen that before. Barbara's picking is so strong, and her smile always makes me smile. Amazing collection of players, and some surprises. Lee Greenwood on sax, who knew? |

Really great! And it's so cool that she borrowed heavily from the Texas Troubadors'arrangement of "Steel Guitar Rag". That's my all-time favorite version! _________________ Tommy Detamore

I wonder what she thinks of her steel playing days and the steel guitar today? I wish someone would do an interview about that. I saw a picture of the music room in her house and it had all kinds of instruments but no steel guitar. I have the impression she has pretty much put her musical days behind her. A great steel player. |
