I am working to nail down my equipment for instrumental solo gigs.
It's going to be for pedal steel and lap steel with backing tracks, no singing.(unless someone else sings).
I need to figure out amplification and mixing with the backing tracks.
And I need a simple backing track player. Don't like Pads or Phones, they are too fiddly to control, unless there is a way to lock their settings.
I have ample effects units, like PodXT or Zoom, as well as Boss pedals.
Can I use the Roland Cube80, or do I need a PA system? It needs to be compact and portable.
Any suggestions?

I use a small Behringer mixer, and a powered PA speaker. I use my $45 RCA Walmart tablet to play the background tracks.

I too use a small Behringer mixer for tracks as well as steel for solo performing, [mostly at our Church]. I use tracks on CDs played through a small "personal" sized CD player into the mixer and to the amp. Your Cube amp would do fine, depending on the size of the venue. I have used my Nash. 112, Cube 80GX, or my Carvin BX500, all with the little Behrringer mixer.

I have the UB1222FX-Pro. I bought it in case I needed to run several mics. I built my own case for it.

Here's a picture of the setup with me and my wife at a Christmas gig. You'll see the Harbinger V2112 speaker, and the mixer sitting beside me.
The mic in from of the speaker is connected to the mixer for a singer, but is not right in front of the picture. It's the angle of the pic that shows it that way. It was actually 5 feet in front.

If you look just to left of my head (looking at the picture) you will see my mic attached to a small clamp on boom stand.
It's clamped to the rear right leg of the steel.

Thank you, Scott, for the detailed descriptions. You gave me a lot of ideas to think about.

George, Thanks for the product name. I checked it out on YouTube. Nice mixer.

The Harbinger powered speaker also comes in the V2115, 15". I've head one, it would sound nice for C6 pedal steel.

Peter, here's a very compact set up with the mixer able to stay in the rear of the speaker or be removed (user's preference).

A friend of mine has one of these and it works great.

To keep things compact you could run a tube pre amp like this. I use this on stage with no amp, vol pedal to input of the pre amp, then out to a wet verb pedal and then to the mixer.

I got a small case and have everything wired just have to plug in the power bar and connect my cable on the pedal steel.

By the way the speaker amp combo folds into one unit and is not heavy.

I use the Roland/Boss JS-10 to play the backing tracks and Roland BA330 powered speakers/mixer . The system is very light weight and sounds great. Sometimes I use a external mixer if needed to get a monitor mix . The JS-10 works off of SD memory cards and has software where you can arrange your songs in orders and it can hold a more songs than you can play in a night . If I need to play loud or outside I have another system with subs and tops and crown power and mackie mixer .

If you are playing small venues or on the Street , I suggest you consider the Roland Street type amps.

They have 2-3 inputs , on board EFX - mic input and are Battery powerd too, good for 4 + hours on some AA size.

They have a dual 6.5 speaker model made for Acoustic that has more power.

All sound plenty good enuff ---- the micro cube is most likely too small and low power beyond bedroom volume.

If you want more overall power the Roland KeyBoard amps do the same with much more wattage and several speaker sizes.

The Roland is nearly indestructible - plenty adequate sound and very portable.

These all in one type amp set ups eliminate many of the connections and adjustments associated with a separate mixer.

The Roland Keyboard units also have a 3 pin out if you get to a larger venue with their own PA.

I think you should pm Dom Franco. He uses a solo setup regularly.

I have been doing solo gigs for many years. At first with cassette background tracks not easy! If you are set against mp3 players you will be limited to a computer or cds. Cds are not bad, I can get 20 or more songs on a disc. A simple player or cd deck works fine you just need a set list with the title and track number. But an mp3 player will hold 100s of tracks with titles keys even lyrics! That's the best way for me.
