This is really a wide open question. What made you want to play steel guitar and how did you get started with it?

I'd heard quite a bit of steel (mostly on country rock tunes) and loved the sound. A few years ago I saw now-defunct UK band The Rockingbirds who had a great pedal steel player (I think he was called Patrick Arbuthnot). A few years later, after much deliberation, I sold my Telecaster & bought a steel. I'm still rubbish on it but I love playing.

For me , I was drawn in by Rusty Young of Poco, Buddy Cage with the New Riders and John Call with Pure Prarie League..

That was an awesome era for a young foolish kid playing Rock and Roll ( that would be me ) but leaning towards Country. I am so grateful I was hooked on Buffalo Springfield back then as that was the beginning of my transition..

Moving to Steel and playing regularly with the local Country bands prior to the Urban Cowboy fad was an unbelievable stroke of luck. Those roots cannot be replaced.

But I did not sell my Telecaster ! I may have been young and foolish but I wasn't NUTS !

The only difference now is I'm old and foolish..and maybe a bit nuts I suppose..

We usually keep "survey" topics in the "Steel Players" section, Joe. The "Pedal Steel" section is for more instrument-related topics.

I've moved this to "Steel Players".
