Not a new idea (it's been done in Europe for many years), but I heard about this from some friends from Appleton WI who participated in a charitable event to raise money for the local symphony. It's called Sinfonia and they basic idea is volunteers pay to play in a one-night-only amateur orchestra. The catch is, players cannot play an instrument they already know--they have to pick something unfamiliar. (Further, the instrument rental fees are in turn donated to the cause.)
Long story short, after a few weeks of woodshedding, practice and rehearsal, the Sinfonia volunteers play in concert--alternating with the real orchestra...all in the name of hilarious contrast. The pro players play a bit of "Blue Danube Waltz" then the volunteers essay "The Blue Da-Newbie Waltz". The results are hilarious and well received by the audience.

I'm not on Facebook myself, but there's more information and videos there. _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |

No big deal - I still play steel like I'm unfamiliar with it!
Seriously, that sounds like an interesting and fun way to raise money for a good cause. |

Apparently the percussion coach had his hands full trying to get the petrified tympani players to hit the things at the right times. _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |
