Hi folks,
Any tips on getting that dang ball end between those big changer finger supports on a Sho~Bud Pro II --and keeping it there while you wind the string?
This is driving me nuts! Heaven forbid I ever bust a string on the bandstand with this bad-boy.

I do it like this: cut off the string , so that it isn't too long. Than I fold the last quarter inch or so, so that you get a kind of an arrowhead. Now at the changer end get the ball into place and keep a little tension on the string so that it doesn't po out. Now with the left hand put the 'arrow' you made through the hole on the tuner. Right hand moves up and more to the center of the string, keeping a little tension on the string, but not too much. Now wind the tuner with the left hand ...
It's hard to put in words, but very easy to do. Remember: the arrow on the other side of the string is the secret, it prevents the string from slipping out of the hloe in the tuner.

The above, but use a string winder.
I always cut the string holding it from the end plate, and a bit past the NEXT tuner up in line.
Yeah the 1st time it can drive you BATS. |

| After putting the ball end in the changer I put some gaffer tape (duct tape) on top of the string and attach it to the top of the changer. This helps a little in stopping the ball end from falling out, but you still need to maintin a bit of tension on the string. Once you've got the string in the tuner and up to pitch, just remove the tape. I have a piece of tape stuck to the end plate of the guitar in case I have to replace a string during a gig. |

I should type this in all caps, but a leatherman has a small screwdriver blade that after filing or grinding it a bit narrower is JUST THE TICKET. a little more than necessary and rounding the edges will keep it from scarring the slots. You simply push the ball down with it, feeling it go over the end of the slot, pull it up into the slot with the screwdriver making it go into it, and leave the screwdiver in while winding it snug if you need to.
This is about the only way to get the 52s and 68-70s in the C6 necks that I've found.

Greg,
Try putting about a half circle bend at the ball end of the string about the same radius of the changer finger. Try to keep the ball square (in line) to the string and it'll help even more.
