Just heard Benny Martin old Air Force tape. He introduced the steel player as Little Darlin. Can't recall who that was

He was the youngest member of the band that played on "The Andy Griffith Show."

Craig, are you talking about the Darlings? That was a fictional band comprised of the bluegrass band "The Dillards", and the actor, Denver Pyle. Rodney Dillard, of that band, played both guitar and Dobro, so maybe it was a reference to him?

Little Darlin' was also a record label, and one of Lloyd Green's instrumental songs featured on his first album.

Are you sure he's referring to a steel player?

The Foggy Mountain Boys had a bass player in the 1950s named Charles Elza who was nicknamed "Little Darlin'". Martin also spent time in that band at that time and Elza may have been on the Air Force session.

He was aka "Kentucky Slim" and did some comedy bits.

He's the only musician I ever heard of with the "Little Darlin'" nickname.

I have some of those old Ar Force transcriptions, but nothing to play them on anymore. Benny used buddy Emmons on some of them and jokingly called him "Buddy Hammonds".

Donny, I think Craig was making a Bakerjoke. They're almost like jokes.
And Tunein lets you rewind a bit. Benny definitely said either Little or Lil' Darlin on steel guitar, and Joe Zinkan was the bassman. It was a lap steel, not pedal steel. Well played, but not easily identified, at least by my ears.

I recall also he would use Billy Robinson and Walter Haynes on some shows. I worked quite a few shows with him when we came this way. He was a jolly, never a dull moment guy. He referred to his big Martin guitar as "my little rosebud guitar."
