It seems that many competent musicians (band leaders in particular) have trouble with steel players. They don't understand why sheet music for the steel guitar is not available. They also say that the steel doesn't have enough range for the bass notes and question what should be done is for steel players to just make up their own chords so it sounds close to what the band is playing.
I have a hard time believing this. Sure, often the timing, stops and keys are changed, but if their opinion is true, how helpful is the sheet music? A person can play the music on a piano and reproduce the sound as it was written, but what is the best approach to translate sheet music to the pedal steel guitar? It seems that there should be a method to map sheet music for the pedal steel guitar, but how? I don't see much written about this question. _________________ Gene Vance
