I'm so feeble-minded. Every time I'm sure I know what I think or think I know what I know someone tells me (or my guitar tells me) I've got it wrong. Which plain 6th string will have more tuning stability--.020 or .022? My mind says that the .022 is under more tension and will be more sensitive to the slightest tweak or pedal movement. Right? |

I've used both and liked the 22P better.
I've been using an 18W lately and it's working great, smooth action without excessive pedal travel.

The reason I tried one years ago and went back to a .020 was more that it put too much pull on my SB spring mech. I think it returned a litle lower, and out of tune. in the open position it seemed a little deader than I liked. I use .017s for the 5th. 18s broke more.
I do use a 22 for the 5th string on the C6, as there's a stronger signal, and makes for more consistency on the strings I play more.
It did seem a little touchy too on the E9.

Hi Emmett! That's pretty radical. I gave up on the wound 6th after close to a year---just couldn't get happy with the tone and lack of bite & volume (but I was ecstatic with the tuning stability!). But I was using 22W and/or 24W. 18W? Wow. That's a different idea.
But unwound is what I've decided on. I about to put in a bulk string order at juststrings.com and I'm trying to figure the physics on the plain 20 vs. 22.
Hasta la pasta.
edited for Eric: yeah, it looks like 20 is what it'll be. It's what I have on right now and if I'm wrong in ordering a dozen @ $2.90, hell, I'll drink a couple fewer beers some day next year and things will be back in balance.[This message was edited by Jon Light on 19 June 2004 at 12:04 PM.] |

Hey Jon, why not buy your strings through the forum? I order mine right here to help support this wonderful site.
B0b gets my strings right out to me postpaid and they arrive in my mailbox. Good price too. |

John--I'm all for spreading the word about that.
I support the forum in my own ways. And I get my strings in my own ways. |

Jon--I have to confess, it was an accident that I started using the 18W. The tiny music store in our tiny village was out of 20's and 22's, but he had plenty of wound 18's. I thought it was worth a try, and now I really like it. |
