Hello friends,
My beloved Supro lap steel, it's an early '60s one, black and white that they must have made boatloads of, has an odd problem. It sounds terrific on 5 of its strings, but the A string ( C E G A C E) is much lower in output than the others. Any idea of what could cause this and more importantly if there's anyone out there who works on these pickups or makes a replacement?
I love this little steel's tone, been with me lo these 16 years.

| I have seen this happen when someone reversed the magnet that is located at the end of the pickup. Generally one side is the magnet and the other is silver painted wood. |

Did you try raising the pole screw? There are six little screws on the pickup. Turn the screw under the A string about 1/2 turn. If the screws are too low the output will be weak, too high and the string will distort or it may buzz on the screw.
Like Jim said, try flipping over the magnet. On the two magnet Valcos (prior to the late 50s) the magnets have to be installed so that the polarity is correct. If not, the sound is weak and somewhat out of phase. Your early 60's guitar probably has a single magnet and a dummy magnet (wood). I'm not sure if the magnet installation would matter in that case, but it's worth trying. Try raising the pole screw first.

they move around, in those pups. although mine always inch their way up, instead of down.
