I'm certain many old tymers like myself (now eighty-eight) recall the big band of Sammy Kaye especially during the WW2 years. Sammy always used a steel guitarist in his band which most big bands of that era snubbed. QUESTION: Does anyone recall who the steel guitarist was ? His name, anything ? He seldom played any solos but added a nice sound to the band.
Just curious but would appreciate any information on this "mysterious" steel player of a by-gone era. |

"The Guitarist and Steel guitarist was a friend of mine. His name was Johnny Monaco. Johnny doubled on both straight and steel. He was from Brooklyn."
"Sammy's original guitarist and steel guitarist was also a fine vocalist. His hame was Tommy Ryan who went on to form his own band. Kaye liked Hawaiian guitar but preffered musicians who could double as there was not as much for steel guitar in his arrangements." |

Thank you Mitch. I should have asked Jody as I regularly
corresponded with him for many years. I wish he would contact me again ... I have great respect for Jody ! |
