I bought some new old-style National picks for my banjo, and some hours into playing them they started making a scratchy noise. So I had a pair cobalt-plated, and I can say that the plating lives up to my expectation. However, I don't know about other brands, and I haven't tried them out on the steel because I'm happy with my Kysers.
