About a year ago, I found Shelagh McDonald's 1970s records online. Very well played and recorded English folk rock in the tradition of Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, etc. Turns out those folks and the cream of the circa 1971 folk scene were in the studio with her. A little searching brought forth an amazing story. She had a bad LSD experience ... it destroyed her voice, leaving her sounding like a "strangled cat"and disappeared from music for 40 years but is now singing again.

You can read more and hear her here: https://shelaghmcdonald.wordpress.com

At the time when her two regular albums were recorded I was quite aware of British Folk- Rock. Of course there was a lot I hadn't heard of. One of them was she. I had a few records from the B&C label where she also recorded.
She is amazing!

Charlie will like it, I'm sure.

Yes, very much. This quite a 'discovery' and a story well worth reading. What a long strange trip. We love to read of someone's return.
Thanks for the links, Andy and Joachim.
The voice is striking in some similarity to Sandy, but nonetheless authentic and very much part of the tradition. Her piano playing is lovely.
Here's a demo for her second album Stargazer.

I found this Utube comment interesting:
Quote:
I see Shelagh perform every month. She plays at an open mic night that I run in The Crown Tavern in Lanark on the 3rd Thursday of every month - Shelagh always turns up and plays a few tunes........Smile

Here's what she said about living apart: "SM: I don’t miss the tents – it’s enough to have memories of the good times...."

Here's a terrific blog site for this genre. I've learned about a number of artists here whom I'd otherwise never have known about.

The group Eclection, pre Fortheringay. It featured Sandy's husband Trevor Lukas and the drummer.
