I just watched a 1939 movie called "Honolulu", and there on a stage with Hawaiian musicians was Andy Iona playing his Rickenbacher frypan ! Very Happy
The movie was Hollywood-ized a bit of course, and not sure the hula dancers were doing it right !!
Andy's steel guitar certainly sounded good though !

In one part of the movie, one of the actors was supposedly flying to Hawaii on the clipper, which I believe was an early one, a Sikorsky (sp) ?... fying boat...

Interesting... the movie showed today on Turner Classic Movies channel. Today they're showing all vintage "Hawaii" theme movies, 1930s, 40s, 50s. The movies will probably be on the TCM on-demand web site for a few days too. I am totally hooked on that channel!

Thanks for sharing this with us, Eleanor Powell definitely should be on dancing with the stars! And Gracie Allen is just as scatter brained as ever (in a great talented way!)

It was perhaps a sign of the times that Honolulu was not received well among the Hawaiian establishment (moneyed, influence and conservative) in the same way that Carmen Miranda was ridiculed in Brazil.
