Every amp I have had has benefited when using the Black Box. It tamed the highs without letting them get "klangy" Seems like Pat Quilter has solved the problem with the Steelaire amp and I no longer need the Black Box. Is it just my ears playing tricks on me, or has anybody else experienced the same thing and no longer use the Black Box after acquiring the Quilter?
PS: I am using the 3 cord hookup which add's a buffer. I don't know if this hookup makes any difference or not in comparing with and without the Black Box. Compared to the normal 2 cord hookup, there are more highs with the 3 cord hookup, which is exactly what is supposed to happen. By adding the buffer, you don't loose highs. |

George, are you using a pot pedal? That would explain what you're telling us, I think. Using the three-wire setup means that the cord from your guitar to the amp is the most important one in the chain... money here is well-spent. If you used cheap, long cords then you'd have more benefit from a buffer at the guitar like the Izzy, BB, etc... if your volume pedal had a buffer then you might not see any benefit from 3 vs 2 cord. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

The last time my on-again-off-again chamber music trio performed, I demoed the amp with and without the Black Box to the lady who leads the group. She preferred the amp without it. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Stephen, yes I am using a pot pedal...Goodrich 120. had two Hilton pedals and they just weren't for me. I have an Izzy and plugged it into the guitar. Then I tried it on the output of the volume pedal. Neither way suited me as good as the 3 cord hookup in the Quilter. I have a rack system right beside me. I am using George L cords no longer than 3 ft.
And Mike, that is interesting what the lady said about the Black Box, but what is your opinion, if any. Women seem to be able to hear high's better than we do. Maybe she was hearing something that you didn't.
Thanks, and Mike, I get what kind of steel's you play. Clever. |

I've tried mine with and without the BB. I prefer the Quilter without the BB. I do have an active volume pedal. |

George, I am undecided. I usually, but not always, use the Black Box on my solo gigs.
The lady in question's name is Carole Mukogawa, You can look her up and see how accomplished she is.
She knows more than me, and she's better at what she does than I am at what I do. Ive already learned a lot from her, and continue to learn from her every time we play together.
It is a honor and privilege to play with her.
BTW, she also prefers the sound of the zirc bar to any of my steel bars. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Mike, what volume pedal are you using ? Is the BB really needed with an active pedal ? I am not even really sure what the purpose of the black BB is. |

I thought the BB would be the icing on the cake for my Quilter, but I actually prefer the amp wit out it. I use a pot pedal.
I did however put the BB in front of my '74 Session 400 that I recently had the original JBL reconed, and I can tell you it made a HUGH difference! Probably the closest I ever got to the sound I've been hearing in my head for the last 40 years. Now if it only wasn't so damn big and heavy and I wasn't so old... |

I use a Quilter with a pot pedal ( Carter pedal w/ a Tom Bradshaw pot ) and the buffered pedal loop. I don't have a Black Box to test against. The Quilter was my plan A; plan B was a Black Box and a Twin or a Twin-like amp.
I didn't need the Plan B.
With the Quilter I don't have to keep batteries. |
