Floyd sounds a bit like Willie Nelson circa 1962-63.

Barry,
Charleton joined ET in '62 and stayed in Nashville almost 12 years. As far as I know, he never toured with anyone other than Tubb, but he did many sessions. He and his Sho~Bud can be heard on recordings by Willie Nelson, Wade Ray, Norma Jean etc.

Listening again after so many decades makes me remember how Tom Brumley’s “Together Again†playing had completely messed with my head, since I was playing so many variations of his inversion lick on this tune. No other steel player ever had that effect on the way I thought about the instrument.
Since I was always leader I made sure the steel was used a lot and that it was always turned up…LOUD!
The steel was my first D-10 Sho-Bud Permanent, with the pearl inlay heart in the center. The amp was my black-face Fender Deluxe with 1 12†JBL.

it's always fun to get the facts after lots of people
lay out their incorrect assumptions! 
floyd actually sounds alot like hank thompson
to me.
lots of steel from that era seems less precise.
day always sounded a little pitchy.
recording quality was worse.
lloyd really cleaned up his picking and attack
later as well as others. |

Hey Chris, it doesn't bother me in the least to be corrected by the man himself. I was just venturing a guess and I never assumed I was right. If you get some entertainment out of it then so much the better. Anyway, we were right about the guitar!
Lloyd's playing is always so inventive and exciting and I'm glad to have been turned on to another great example of it. Thanks Ricky and especially Lloyd. |
