Hi,
I love listening to George Jones early albums (Pappy Daily producing) almost as much as listening to Jerry Byrd. Who is the pedal steel player and the fiddle player?
thanks |

I know Sonny Curtis, played for George, and Tammy, but I'm not sure if he played with early George. -Jake- |

Back in the 60s there was plenty of Buddy Emmons on George's better albums.

Sonny is a forum member, though not a very active one. If you start a new thread titled "Question for Sonny Curtis" and ask about specific songs, he just may be able to clear up who did what sessions. I've asked him a lot about that kind of stuff in person, and he is always very helpful.
It is terrible that all of the other players mentioned are no longer here to answer. |

Sonny did the steel work on all of George Jones' records from 1964 to 1969.
You can check out his web page here:

Thanks for the info. I meant to check his site, but the computer I was using blocked it.
I think is was mistakenly thinking of his recordings with Tammy, which were very "hit or miss" as to whether or not he was on them (since Pete Drake was under contract with the record label). |

Sonny Curtis has a TON of history. He once owned one of the first Emmons Stereo P/P's like #2 or 3, had one of the early, early Sho-Bud perm's while playing with GJ. You can see it on the very early Jones Boy's Instrumental Albums. It was a double neck, natural maple body with lite green necks. Can't figure out why he's never been inducted into the HOF??????? He's definitely a treasure to the steel guitar community.

I agree! I'm fairly confident he would already be in the Hall Of Fame had he not taken a couple decades off and fallen off most people's radar.
Another interesting thing... I think he's even better on C6 than he is on E9! I know that's an arguable opinion, but anyone who's seen him live will agree that he can cook on it. |
