I never thought I'd sell this guitar but I'm going a different direction and I've got to let it go.
This is a black mica D-10, built by Gary Carpenter. It sounds absolutely incredible. It is easily one of the best sounding and playing steels I've ever sat down to, and I have played some very desirable guitars. I would describe the sound, with the BL-705's in it now, as a full, modern tone with strong and rich mids, a smooth top end, and a tight bass. The tone is even across the entire neck, as is the response. It is smooth sounding and dynamic. Seriously the sound of this steel kicks a$$. There is something unique about it compared to all other Rains I have played. Also, as is the case with all of Gary's guitars, it has fantastic pedal and lever action. These are really smooth playing guitars. 14 hole bell cranks.
This steel also has some fun history. It was Gary's personal steel for a number of years(I am the second owner after him) and he used it with a lot of Texas singers and on his weekly at Pearl's. He told me he also played it on a bunch of RFD-TV shows. Here is a video of Gary playing this steel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tMDDzDJbyk
This has been my main guitar for about two years. I've used it on a bunch of sessions, including Robert Ellis' new record coming out in June, as well as my instrumental record which I haven't put out yet. I played Coal Miner's Daughter with Loretta Lynn, Buddy Miller, Jim Lauderdale, Ry Cooder & friends at the Ryman on this guitar. Its been on a bunch of festival stages in the states and in a -lot- of Texas dancehalls.
Here's a funky instrumental I used it on for a Xmas record: https://soundcloud.com/whvanhorn/02-o-come-o-come-emmanuel/s-EfUYB keep in mind that it's being run through a lot of plug-ins, including an amp sim. You can get an idea of how it sounds though. Fast forward to the middle to hear a little closer to a direct sound.
While it is in good shape cosmetically, it has been gigged and shows it in some places. The metal is shiny, as you can see, but doesn't appear brand new. There are scratches on the backside of the left endplate that were there when Gary sold it to me, which I'm including a picture of. OH, and that TCB sticker was given to Gary by Elvis' body guard. So that's cool.
Copedent is Emmons, E's on left, B's to Bb on LKV, f#'s to G# on RKL.
C6 is emmons, lower 3 on RKL, raise 4 on RKR, and pedal 4 is Gary's which raises 4 and 10 a whole step.
Price is $3,000 FIRM plus shipping and paypal fees. The only trade I would consider is a Legrande III, possibly a zum. |
