Anyone have specs on the width of current day pedal steel pickups? I'm planning to migrate from a pre-RP Mullen to something else; one negative of the Mullen is the very narrow pickup cavity. I'm interested in trying Alumitone, Telonics, etc, but simply can't shoehorn them into my beloved Mullen.

Thanks!

Hey John... My BL 705 pick up is 1 1/2 on the top of the bobbin and 2 Inches across the base plate of the bobbin. I think most of the modern pickups are about these measurements.

John - Back when I played a pre-RP Mullen U-12, I installed an Alumitone with no problems. The top of the pickup was probably larger than the pickup cavity; however, the "legs" fit in quite easily. I tried a 10-1 one time and had to remove the neck and have a buddy enlarge the pickup opening.

Hi John,
I played Mullen guitars from the late 1980s up into the 1990s. They were all equipped with either George L or Lawrenece narrow mount pickups. After going through what seems like hundreds of other brand guitars, I came back home to Mullen guitars a couple of years ago. One of my Mullen guitars is a Royal Precision equipped with narrow mount re-issue Lawrence 705. I had no problem with fit. They dropped right in.
By the way, through my journey, I feel there are few comparisons to Mullen guitars for the tones I like and all Mullen guitars are wrap around design!😊

John, if your only concern is the width of the pickups, the Mullen Pre RP's and RP's both accommodate modern standard 'Narrow' width pickup mounts.

Most pickups are either made in "narrow" mount models with mounting holes at the top and bottom, or in a "wide" mount version with two mounting holes on each side (the neck side and the changer side).

In the case of our pickups, the mounting configuration is determined strictly by the base plate, which is affixed to the pickup at the time of manufacture.

I have had narrow mount pickups in my Pre-RP for years and have changed them a number of times.

I appreciate all the info, friends.

My pre-RP 12-string cavities are only 1-3/8" wide, which limits what I can put in there, one of several reasons I'm looking to eventually move to a different guitar, might be a Mullen G2, Zumsteel SD12 if I can find the right one, or ? Jim Palenscar shoehorned a narrow Lawrence 9-12 into my E9 neck, and I like the sound of it, but who doesn't like variety and flexibility?!

Tommy White, is your main guitar a Mullen G2? What pickups are you liking in there these days?

John,
Yes, my main guitar and favorite is a Mullen G2 equipped with re-issue 705 pickups.
This guitar and pickup combination has so much to offer in a variety of tones with just a simple tweak of the amp or adjusting my technique.😊
